MATHEMATICS PROGRAM IN CLASS: "GO MATH"
We will work on number sense, math sense, one-to-one correspondence, estimation, geometry, data analysis, measurement and addition-subtraction over the year, using our state’s math curriculum as a guide. Often our learning uses ‘manipulatives’, objects we can touch and count and understand in a concrete way. Research shows that children who master numbers in a concrete way gain ‘math sense’ and get ready to understand the abstract concepts of numbers and symbols. We will have many mathematical exposures and experiences which do not end up with a paper product but are just as valuable for your child’s developing sense of numeracy. Our program, "Go Math" is designed for an all-day kindergarten, so we will not finish all the written recording on the pages in the workbook, but we will go through every problem together on our screen, and we will orally do every problem in the book.
MATHEMATICS PROGRAM AT HOME: MY MATH HOMEWORK
For mathematics practice, every Monday your child will bring home a page with some math questions and explorations. Guide your child to do the counting/ patterning/ sequencing/ addition/ subtraction or whatever is called for in the questions. Send the homework in during that same week. I share it with the class, and send your child's homework back so you can use it for review. The next Monday, you’ll get a new math page. I want children to know that mathematics is all around us; it’s not just something we do in class. On the back of the math homework, there will be a sight word poem introducing our 30 kindergarten sight words.
